How much does it cost to install a security entry door?

Home or business security is a significant issue. When a property owner wants to know that their main entrance is almost impervious to any sort of tampering they will have a security entry door installed. This usually means a steel door, but it doesn't automatically indicate that it will have to be an industrial or unattractive model. The modern steel door will feature mullions, panels, rails, and many other decorative features, but will still be durable enough to deliver full security coverage.

For the purpose of this discussion we will look at the costs and materials of installing a steel security entry door in a residential location. This door can come with panel designs, a wood fiber coating to allow it to be stained or painted, and can use a variety of durable locking mechanisms.

The average materials and prices for this project would include:

  • The Door - the average front door will measure around 3'x6'8". A basic model that has a factory primed and baked-on polyester finish is going to cost around $199. This is likely to be a "pre-hung" door that can swing from the right or left side of the frame, and the hanging framework ensures even more security. This type of door should use a minimum of 24 gauge steel along with a steel frame to provide optimal results. The best models will also have a fire rating, usually in the area of 20 minutes, and also offer a good amount of insulation in the core of the door. Rarely will a security entry door include windows, and if they are available they will usually be double pane and in the "mullion" style which appear high along the top of the door itself;
  • The Installation - although many steel security doors are sold as pre-hung units, the installation of a door has to be done very well if it is going to withstand efforts at forced entry. This means that a qualified carpenter should be hired for the work, and this is a project that will take a full day of work to complete. With the average price for labor around $45, this adds $360 to the project costs;
  • The Locks - at the very minimum, a security entry door must have a lockset that is unable to be picked or forced. This means a high-quality deadbolt is of necessity. This too is something that should be installed by a knowledgeable professional, and locksmiths and carpenters are good choices for the job. The average cost for a set with high-quality knobs, a deadbolt strike plate, and other security features is $60. With installation, the total cost of the deadbolt-style locks will be roughly $150.

Enhancement and improvement costs

  • Keyless Entry - along with a good deadbolt, someone concerned with security at an entry point should also consider the installation of keyless entry pads. There are individual sets that can rely on batteries or electrical services, and there are also manual units too. Most will also offer a deadbolt assembly included in their design, and this can make for a two-fold and flawless locking system. They range in price from $40 to $130.

Hello, Tool-Timers!!: security doors

I just bought a new security door and need some insight on installing it:
1. the instructions don't specify how much space should be between the lock jamb and the painted galvanized metal security door: should the jamb be placed snug up against the door frame when mounting or should there be some gap? How much gap should there be? What can I use for shims to get correct jamb gap on the lockset side of door during installation?
2. door mounting on house---should I use the included one-way screws or get hex head wood screws??: some of my neighbors use hex wood screws on their security doors for convenience: will the wood screws with flanged hex heads work to prevent jamb marring? Can I use thin flat washers under regular hex heads to make for a nice finished unmarred look? What...
